From its importance, electricity consumption increased in-lined with the country’s GDP growth. For Thailand, it is estimated that electricity consumption shall grow around 4-5% per annum or around 1-2% above GDP growth in every year.

The government plans to develop the electricity generating capacity for the next 20 years under the PDP 2010 (Power Development Plan) by

  • Distribute the type of fuel for generated electricity to reduce dependence on natural gas
  • Increase the private sector participation in providing energy
  • Promote electricity from renewable energy by providing ADDER for Small Power Producer (SPP) and Very Small Power Producer (VSPP)

By 2573, the proportion of electricity generation from renewable energy expects to be more than 5%, or equal to 4,617 MW.
